Please click here to apply for our upcoming summer session at Stanford.
Virtually all of our applications are submitted online and our application allows you to save your work from session to session before you submit. If you have problems, please try switching your browser (for example, from Safari to Chrome). You can also email us directly at email@example.com and we’ll be happy to help.
Who should apply
Apply if you will be entering the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades in September 2020 (please contact us if you/your student will be entering the 9th grade as we accept younger students only on a case-by-case basis). We also accept a limited number of rising college freshmen/women who are seeking to pursue journalism in college but have not had the opportunity to practice it in high school. Previous journalism experience is not required — you don’t have to be part of a journalism program at your school, though we can help you launch or improve one. We welcome international students, students from across the U.S., and students who live near Stanford and would like to commute to the program from home, as well as students of diverse backgrounds who require scholarship assistance (see below).
Recommendation and clips
In addition to the application, please ask your journalism adviser, teacher or guidance counselor to write a short (250 words) letter of recommendation for you. Have him/her email this recommendation to firstname.lastname@example.org from advisers, teachers or counselors using official school email accounts. Alternatively, your recommender can send the letter on school letterhead to Newsroom by the Bay, P.O. Box 20105, Stanford, CA 94305-9991. Applications are not complete until the recommendation is received.
Clips of your work are not required unless we ask for them.
What happens next
We respond to applications very quickly, usually within a week after we receive your recommendation. There is no application deadline — as soon as we receive a completed application and recommendation, we evaluate it and email you with an acceptance or decline.
However, your space is not reserved until you pay. The payment deadline for accepted students is April 15. After this date, we offer any remaining spaces to students on our waitlist. In years when we experience high demand we ask for additional beds from Stanford. If that is the case and you/your student is admitted after April 15, we will give you an alternate payment deadline.
Decision and payment
Newsroom by the Bay accepts payment by credit card (you will have this option on your invoice), as well as PayPal and check. Please wait to hear from us that you are accepted into the program before making your payment.
We offer a $500 early bird discount for residential students who apply and pay by March 1. Returning students also are eligible for a $500 alumni discount. However, remember that you must be accepted before paying.
Are scholarships available?
We offer a limited amount of need-based financial aid. For more details, please click here for our NBTB Scholars information. The deadline for NBTB Scholars applications is March 1.
If you have questions about our application process or aid, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly at email@example.com.
