An announcement on Summer 2021

Due to ongoing changes caused by the COVID pandemic, Newsroom by the Bay will not offer a residential program at Stanford this summer.

Stanford began welcoming back undergraduate juniors and seniors for spring quarter last week. But as of this writing, Stanford is still in Stage 2 of its Research Recovery program, with highly controlled access to dorms, classrooms and libraries.

While we’d love to be back on campus this summer, we also know that continuing uncertainty about COVID cases and variants both at home and abroad, as well as evolving travel restrictions that impact our international staff and students, will make it difficult for us to gather in person.

Our online program also will go on hiatus as we work on some long-needed program development and plans for Summer 2022.

After COVID closed schools across the world last spring, NBTB launched an all-virtual program, resulting in our biggest-ever production of student stories to all five of our publication channels, including broadcast, podcast and magazine.

Chalkbeat, an award-winning nonprofit known for its in-depth coverage of education issues, featured our “What Learning Looks Like” digital storytelling project on how students adjusted to the worldwide lockdowns.

Several students entered NBTB work in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, winning top honors. Students earned nearly three dozen badges. Students earned nearly three dozen badges in areas from reporting and writing to social media and print magazine design.

So look forward with us — please join our mailing list now so that we can keep you in the loop for Summer 2022 including our application process.

Stay safe and be well!
