NBTB 2012 … ready, set, go!

We’re about ready to begin our Summer 2012 session on Sunday, June 24 — and we couldn’t be more excited! We’re looking forward to welcoming 56 students from all over the country and abroad, plus teachers and team leaders whose dedication and talent are sure to inspire us all.

Teagan Sebba, last year’s winner of the “Sharkie” award and a counselor this year, is already hard at work sharing what we have in store with our NBTB community — catch her tweets @newsroombtb!

Our lineup of guest speakers includes Burt Herman, co-founder of Storify, Inc., which Time magazine called one of “The 50 Best Websites of 2011” for its creative, cutting-edge technology that helps journalists and others to write stories using social media, and Nick Ferentinos, a Dow Jones News Fund Teacher of the Year, whose students at Homestead High School in California wrote the first-ever story in the nation about an HIV-positive student. Journalist and entrepreneur Jesse Garnier will talk about sfbay.ca, his innovative, high-energy  hyperlocal startup, and visionary editors Staci Baird and Scott Landis will turn the page on the next chapter in news — publishing on the iPad.

We’ll also be hosting master teachers and guest judges drawn from professional journalism, including Pulitzer Prize winning editors, reporters, writers and youth media advocates. And our students will be exploring San Francisco and Silicon Valley on field trips that will help them learn by doing — our teaching motto.
