How the process works
Enrollment is competitive and rolling: As soon as we review and accept your application, you will be notified that you have a place in the program. Applications are not complete until we receive your adviser or teacher recommendation (see below).
Recommendation and clips
In addition to the application, please ask your journalism adviser, teacher or guidance counselor to write a short (250 words) letter of recommendation for you. Have him/her mail this recommendation on school letterhead to Newsroom by the Bay, P.O. Box 20105, Stanford, CA 94309. We also accept recommendations sent to newsroombythebay@gmail.com from advisers, teachers or counselors using official school email accounts. Applications are not complete until the recommendation is received.
Clips of your work are not required unless we ask for them.
Who should apply
Apply if you will be entering the 10th, 11th or 12th grades in September 2012. Students entering the 9th grade are not eligible. Previous journalism experience is not required; you don’t have to be part of a journalism program at your school. We welcome international students, students from across the U.S., and students who live near Stanford and would like to commute to the program from home, as well as students of diverse backgrounds who require scholarship assistance (see below).
Diversity in the classroom and newsroom
Newsroom by the Bay is committed to ensuring diversity in the classroom so that the newsrooms of tomorrow reflect our society as a whole. A limited amount of financial aid is available for students who qualify for the federal free and reduced price lunch program. If you would like to be considered for aid, please email us and we will contact you with details. Additionally, you may wish to seek support from organizations such as Donors Choose. For this, your adviser/teacher must have a Donors Choose account. If you are a teacher or student and you would like more information on this option, please contact us.
Decision and payment
After your application is received, it will be reviewed and you will receive an email informing you if you have been accepted. Please wait to hear from us before sending a check or making a PayPal payment.
We offer a $200 early bird discount for payments received by Feb. 1. However, remember that you must be accepted before paying.

My students have no access to journalism and news media institutes, workshops, conferences, seminars, or “newsroom” opportunities due to the costs associated with travel, registration, and supplies. We are a Title 1 school serving students who are newly arrived and 1st generation young people from countries throughout the Pacific Islands and the Pacific Rim. Some of my students show amazing potential; however, they have had few opportunities for learning and experience beyond the borders of the Hawaiian Islands. I have several who I would love to attend your Newsroom by the Bay Summer; however, they would require full scholarship assistance. What are the possibilities for such aid? I have just registered with Donors Choose; although, I don’t see how scholarships for registration and travel would qualify as an approved project.
Hello, and good to hear from you. Could you please email us directly at newsroombythebay@gmail.com so that we can continue the conversation? We do have limited scholarship assistance for qualified students who meet the reduced-free federal lunch program standard. Please do contact us so that we can discuss further. —Beatrice
Is there a program for teachers?
Hi Maggie! At this time, unfortunately we don’t have an adviser strand, but I can refer you to one that’s excellent: The JEA Advisers Institute, July 8-July 11 this year in Las Vegas. Here is a link for more information: http://jea.org/home/news-events/advisers-institute/. If you have a student at NBTB, or you would like to come and see what we do, you’re entirely welcome to stop by for a day and listen in on classes (and maybe get some ideas for lesson plans). Just let us know when you’d like to come. —Beatrice
